(3) What worked for you in your senior project?

(4) (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would have you done differently to improve your senior project if you could go back in time?

Blog 21: Mentorship

Literal

  • Albert Alvarado at Caique Jiu Jitsu walnut
Interpretive
  • The most important thing I gained from this experience is being able to actually conduct legit research and also being able to back up my answers with evidence, examples, and my own experiments that I conducted. Because of this, I had the ability to put a well written research paper together and it having plenty of evidence to back up my answers. The reason why this was the most important is simply the fact that I now know how to find sources that are reliable and write a paper that made sense and made me look professional. Without taking this part of my senior project serious, then I would not have been able to come up with my answers let alone have a senior project.
Applied
  • I have researched my topic and the effects of sparring on the body, I have conducted my own experiments, interviewed experts in the field of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and have put all that Ive learned to the test. When researching I found my first answer to my EQ along with my third answer. When conducting my interviews with different experts in the field, they helped me come up with my second answer to my EQ. When it came to answer my EQ, I did it by putting myself out there and testing out my answers in a tournament that was related to my EQ. This all helped me answer my essential question because I basically put everything to the test.

End of April

During this month I didn't really do much of Jiu Jitsu due to school work as man know. Since I already competed in my tournament last month, I have only been able to go about 3 times a week. I am now using my mentorship as a plan for my future career. It a great way to prepare my body physically and mentally. I have learned so much through my senior topic.

Blog 20: Exit Interview

1.)  What is the best way for a first degree blue belt in the light weight division, to win the Pan American Tournament?

  • Doing heavy body endurance exercise to achieve maximum performance.
  • Having proper technique and controling your body to garner a submission or win.
  • Making healthy food decisions to gain maximum energy.
2.) The process I took to come up with these answers were, conducting my own experiments, conduct interviews and watch films on my topic. I also researched many things having to do with my project specifically on the tournament side of things and how to have a chance in winning. I also did mentorship, a total of 140 hours (give or take a few hours). I made sure that I put in all of my effort into every single process because I want my end product to great!

3.) The biggest problem I faced was finding research on my essential because of it being so detailed. It was hard at first. I was beginning to doubt myself but when conducting my interview, my interviewees references some sources and books written by the original Gracie's talking about how they prepared for tournaments. I also found some studies referencing how Jiu Jitsu effected the body and eventually the challengers changed their method of fighting.

4.) The two most significant sources were an article written by the National Medical Associate talking about the effects of sport jiu jitsu. Another one of my most important sources was Submission Essentials by Helio Gracie talking about how to achieve a submission and your steps to get there.

Blog 19: Independent Component 2

Literal

(a)  I, James Britt, affirm that i have completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.

(b)  One of the sources that helped me complete my independent component was my interviewee, Pedro Elias who is a 26 year veteran in Brazilian Jiu  Jitsu. He helped come up with my second answer along with my third answer. A book written by Helio Gracie named, "submission essential" was recommended by my mentor and that helped me understand and better explain my second answer.

(c)  In this component, I was conducted more mentorship hours.

(d)
INTERPRETIVE

  • During this time, out was around the time that my tournament came up. It was what I had been training for, the whole year for. During this time i focused on my second answer and experimenting if it was a good answer to my EQ or not. I also studied the competitive jiu jitsu way and made myself get familiar with it. I perfected my technique and enhanced my speed to keep up with my opponents.

APPLIED
  • During this component, I came up with my second answer that might be the most important to my essential question according to an article that I read referencing to the physiological effects of jiu jitsu to the body. On march 12, I had my tournament that I prepared the whole year for. During the tournament I notices it was important that your technique was solid! that your movements were solid when trying to go for a submission! I noticed that that part of jiu jitsu was the most important thing when training for a tournament especially the Pan Americans.

End of March Blog

During this month I had my big tournament which was the Pan Americans. I trained really hard for that day on March 12 but unfortunately The odds weren't in my favor. On my third or fourth match I was injured and was unable to continue do to a rib injury. I had 6 other matches in order to place first but I could not continue. I still trained a little after my loss and injury. I'm training to heal up my body so that I can enter another tournament.
